The Muscular System
Functions
We need the ability to move in order to function, and the Muscular System allows us to do just that. With over 600 muscles in our body that makes up half of our weight, our muscles contract and relax in order to move our skeletal frame, enabling us to move as we please.
The Main Parts
Our Muscular System is made up of three different types of muscles; skeletal (most are attached to bones), smooth (found in internal organs), and cardiac (found in the heart). The skeletal muscles are voluntary (you move them only when you want to), while the smooth and cardiac muscles are involuntary (move on their own). The muscles are attached to bones by tendons, that allow the muscles to move the bones.
Working With Other Body Systems
In order to keep us healthy and functioning, our different body systems work together. Two of the many body systems the Muscular System works with are the Skeletal and Nervous Systems. The Muscular System works with the Skeletal by moving the bones of the Skeletal System that support and protect our body, with the help of tendons. The Nervous System works with the Muscular by sending the commands from the brain to your voluntary muscles through the nerves.
Medical Conditions
One of the many disorders found in the Muscular System is Polymyositis, which causes inflammation and weakening to your skeletal muscles.
There is also Dermatomyositis, which is basically Polymyositis with skin rashes.
Another medical disorder is ALS, which affects the nerves that control the skeletal muscles.

Fun Facts
In just one hour of reading a book, your eye muscles move approximately 10,000 times!
Whenever you take only one step, you are using about 200 muscles!
Muscles never push, they only pull. Even when you think you're pushing something, it is really one of your muscles pulling your bone the opposite direction.
